Yep.
Dar! Can you believe it? Dar is a Folk Festival
favorite with hundreds of thousands of adoring fans.
Her songs are sweet and melodic. This show will sell
about 800 seats so we're having it at the
Presbyterian Church of Westfield, 140 Mountain
Avenue, corner of East Broad Street.
We are lucky to have her; this is my Christmas
present to Westfield. :)
Dar Williams is a
singer-songwriter specializing in
what can be described as "folk-pop".
She’s a favorite at folk festivals
across the nation, and has toured
with the likes of Mary Chapin
Carpenter, Patty Griffin, Ani
DiFranco, The Nields, Shawn Colvin,
Girlyman, Joan Baez, and Catie
Curtis.
Dar was born in Mount Kisco, New
York, and grew up in Chappaqua with
two older sisters, Meredith and
Julie. In interviews, she has
described her parents as "liberal
and loving" people who early on
encouraged a career in
songwriting. Dar began playing the
guitar at age nine and wrote her
first song by age eleven. However,
she was far more interested in drama
through her teen years, lead to a
theater major at Wesleyan
University.
Upon graduating College, in 1990,
Dar moved to Boston to further
explore a career in theater. She
quickly became stage manager of the
Opera Company of Boston, but on the
side began to write songs, record
demo tapes, and take voice lessons.
She soon began performing at
coffeehouses, but due to the
intimidating nature of the Boston
folk music scene, as well as her own
battles with stage fright, things
got off to a rocky start.
Things turned around a bit for her
when she got a gig opening for Joan
Baez. This meeting lead to Joan
recording some of Dar’s songs, which
created a buzz about her in the folk
world.
In 1998, Dar teamed up with
Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky,
forming the group Cry Cry Cry as a
way to pay homage to some of their
favorite folk artists. The trio
released an album of covers and
toured from 1998 to 2000.
Since 2000, Dar’s solo career has
continued to thrive. She has
released three more studio albums,
-- the newest of which is My Better
Self (2005). She has also lent her
talents to support various causes,
founding the Snowden Environmental
Trust and taking part in many
benefit concerts along the way |
